How to Clean Granite Worktops - 5 Top Tips

Granite countertops are one of the most popular choices for bathroom or kitchen counters - and for good reason. Not only are they beautifully stylish - but durable and practical too (although they can be a bit trickier to clean). Here’s a few handy tips on how to best clean and take care of your granite countertops.

  1. Keep Things Simple

The best way to clean your granite countertops is to keep things simple. Just use some soapy hot water! Feel free to add a bit of disinfectant into the solution too, but regular old soap and water will be sure to do the trick in most cases without compromising the varnish or stone itself.

2. Don't Let Things Sit

Kitchens with granite worktops can be tricky one. It's not always easy to maintain them in an environment where so much is going on! Foods like beetroot, olive oil and lemon can all compromise the varnish on your granite countertops and leave stains if not dealt with quickly.

3. Use a Sealant

Applying a sealant is another great way to protect against your granite countertops against stains, scratches and chips. Using a sealant ensures that not only will your granite kitchen countertops keep their beautiful finish and feel, but they will also have an added layer of protection - so you can go about your cooking and cleaning without having to worry about. Remember - if the worst did happen and your granite countertop did become chipped, there are plenty of stone fabrications who could easily make the repairs for you!

Check the Porosity

Like many other stone surfaces, granite worktops can be quite porous. Be sure to regularly check the porosity of your granite counter by placing a small amount of water on the counter - if the area darkens this is an indication that you may need to get some more sealant on there!

Avoid Acidic Cleansers

When trying to get our granite countertops cleaner there is one big no-no. Granite countertop cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or any other acidic main ingredient can be far too acidic to use with granite worktops. The acid is known to break down the sealant used with granite, and using chemicals like ammonia could scratch the surface of the granite and even corrode it!
